BEGINNING OF HANDYMAN GEORGE

Why and how I become Handyman

ABOUT
ME
I grew up in Slovakia, where it isn't
common for workmen to maintain houses, so I learnt my initial
skills through necessity!
I have always been technically minded and
studied in the areas of electrics, electronics mechanics etc.
turning my hands to a wide range of jobs in my early working life.
I have a particular interest in new
technology ( energy sources & renewable energy) and move with
the times as development aids me!
I studied in Slovakia, then in the Czech Republic, and then called
to the army as a national duty for about 2 years and
eventually joined employment in various technical jobs over the
years. My last employer (before I came to England) offered me a
significant pay rise if I learn English (they needed a technician
to go and resolve technical problems all over world), and guess
where you learn best English? Yes, you guessed right, in England
of course. So I came to the UK in 2005 with a knowledge of
about 200 words with very bad pronunciation.
I signed up for English language course and to support myself, I
started do some basic jobs - Cleaning, Gardening, Light repairs,
Home maintenance, e.t.c. while learning English.
When shopping at Wickes I noticed leaflets about how to do various
jobs. I picked up carpentry, plumbing and some others as well, and
every evening before I went to sleep I spent at least an hour with
a dictionary to translate it, so I could compare skill jobs and
practices here in UK and see how they differ from back home in
Slovakia.
Those evening translations well expanded my
vocabulary and helped me through negotiations with any more
complicated work I was approached with.
UNEXPECTED HAPPENED
Then something
unexpected happened. As I get on with my life, learning English
and getting to know the English culture, I met the most nicest,
loveliest, and most beautiful person in my life, my wife. Well I
didn't know it at the time, but somehow feel it.
Fast forward... I
proposed and... was REJECTED. My English proposal was not up to
scratch. So I had to combine every possible variation, it was
scary, but eventually I get there.
My wife is the most supportive
person I have ever met. She came with idea to design my logo. She
supported me with technical translation and study while I prepared
myself for exam here in the UK. I passed so now I am official
a qualified electrician - City &
Guilds 2382 17th. Edition wiring regulation and can work in many
areas around house and office : fix your wiring, change dimmers,
change switches, change lights, change sockets, fix faulty fuses,
change or repair power shower, generally carry on most works on your
electric wiring...
As time progressed I received
more and more requests about all sort of jobs. some small, some
larger.
Over a period of time I met many
people. One of them was an architect, Mr Lomba. He is a great
person. I worked under his management for a few years (until we
moved out of the area) . He taught me a lot, he explained everything
to me in plain language (I needed that a lot in beginning of my
language learning) and whenever I saw that any heated situation he
was approached in life, he always stayed calm and dealt with it in
the best way possible. I learnt a lot from him and I would like to
thank him for all his help and time.
He
even went with me in the car to practice driving in the beginning
as in Slovakia we drive on right side of the road and despite my
panicking on Hanger Lane roundabout (my first drive in his company
car), he stayed calm and guided me through lanes to the exit.
Once we moved to a new area (Burnham between
Slough and Maidenhead) I set up my own Handyman business. Since
then, I have improved properties for customers around Windsor,
Maidenhead, and Slough from about Uxbridge up to Reading. As time
passes on, with my kids' arrival I changed the scope of my jobs
and currently focus on short term jobs from an hour or two up to
half a day or so. A family man's main aim is to be able to help
with childcare ,school drop of/pick up times, not to mention that
most of my customers particularly require those short term jobs.
